This patented device attaches to the instrument magnetically and alters the vibration characteristics of the instrument. It works as an excellent wolf tone tamer, but just as well, its infinite adjustability allows you to tweak the tone to get the maximum from your instrument. It is a simple and cost effective alternative to testing multiple types of strings, bridges and posts, or guessing at making permanent changes to your instrument.
HOW IT WORKS
The original Rezx™ resonance modulator works with special high power magnets to alter the vibration characteristics of the instrument plates. Stringed acoustic instruments including violins, violas cellos and basses etc. have a tone that is uniquely characteristic to the construction, design and types of materials used in the production of the instrument. The tone is significantly affected by the weight and mass distribution of the vibrating plates. The Rezx™ resonance modulator changes the weight of the plates and in turn affects the tone of the instrument. Different areas of the plates react differently and to a greater or lesser degree depending on the weight of the Rezx™. Changing the placement location or weight of the Rezx™ will generate different effects on the tone of the instrument.
AFFECTING THE INSTRUMENT TONE
Hollow body acoustic instruments often exhibit an odd or coarse sound known as wolf notes or at times a dull or “dead” suppressed sound as compared to other notes. These effects are a function of a particular note or range of notes that interfere with each other either positively by combining to vibrate excessively causing the notes to wolf or, in the alternative, the notes interfere negatively causing the note or range of notes to be supressed and dull. The instrument maker cannot predict whether such interferences will be generated and will only find out once the instrument is finished and in its final playing form. Therefore, a great many instruments, and even very expensive ones, especially cellos, exhibit wolf or supressed notes. In some instruments the wolf or suppressed notes are luckily in a range that are outside the normal playing range and therefore not troublesome, but in other cases the wolf or supressed notes can be very problematic. The Rezx™ resonance modulator has the ability to move these wolf or suppressed notes to a range that is either less problematic or ideally completely out of the playing range.
Use of the Rezx™ will also be useful where a change in the tonal characteristic of the instrument is desired. By ajusting the location of the Rezx™, the resonance of the instrument will be modified and can be ajusted in its effect.
BENEFITS
The Rezx™ resonance modulator can be attached to the instrument in seconds with ease and without gluing, drilling or otherwise damaging or modifying the structure or finishes of the instrument. It is held in place by special powerful magnets.
The Rezx™ can be infinitely adjusted to fine tune the resonance of the instrument by simply moving the Rezx™ to different locations on the instrument. It can be placed on the instrument back as well as the top, or even the ribs, tailpiece or fingerboard.
Because of the ease of use, it may be useful for the player to adjust the Rezx™ regularly to modify the tone of the instrument to suit different musical pieces or styles.
The fine grain leather provides protection for the instrument finish as well as providing grip to minimize movement during play.
APPLICATION
The Rezx™ for violin, viola, cello and bass contains 2 segments each. The outer segment is lined on one end with a fine grain leather to protect the exterior finish of the instrument. Separate the segments and remove the plastic storage separator disc. Place the leather lined segment against the body beside the f-hole (making sure to keep the leather end next to the varnish finish for protection), slide the remaining segment thru the f-hole immediately beside the outer segment. The outer segment will pick up the inner segment and hold it in place. By moving the outer segment, the inner will follow. Experiment to find the location that most approximates the desired effect. Generally, the maximum effect is in the region of 3 to 4 cm around the bridge, and areas approximately 3 to 4 cm above and below the f-holes. Least effect is found in the regions next to the corners and ends. All other areas of both the top, back, and ribs have a variable effect. For a greater acoustic effect, a second Rezx™ can be added.
In the case of cellos and basses, do not let the magnet segments drop freely into the body as they will attach to the end pin and may be difficult to remove, or will require the services of a luthier who will have available a special “Rescue Ring” for this purpose.
If finding the right tonal solution is elusive, visit a reputable local luthier who has the knowledge and experience to assess the particular situation. They will have access to a larger variety of Rezx™ products to custom fit a Rezx™ for the instrument.
